Hammons not feeling bad or anything at all. He died a few years ago.

I don't see any reason why MSU can't win. I have to think it's a better job than many other FCS spots even if they haven't made the playoffs in forever.
I work with several parents of MSU students. They'd told me that he was defaulting on the naming payments, but not why. Sounds like a pretty good reason, being expired, that is.

Anyway, I think that MSU would be a pretty appealing position. Plaster Stadium seats 17,500. Bears are in the MVFC. And, at least until their wealthy benefactor passed, he was willing to write some pretty big checks. Maybe this is the search where they land their version of Todd Berry?

MSU had said they were confident they could hire a big name for the job. If you're MSU that means taking on a coach with baggage. Can't say I'm a fan of either of these fellows.

Briles and Petrino are both rumored. As much as Briles history at Baylor is bad, Petrino would be flaat out mistake. He has left so many programs after a year, and usually snuck away in the night ... there is now way he would see a build through. As soon as any FBS came calling, he would be gone.

Question of Briles is more severe issue (covering up a sexual assualt), but I'm not sure there are any allegations prior to Baylor scandal .. nor am I familiar with his actual role in coverup. So maybe a 2nd chance at lower level is in order.

And the winner is... Petrino

Bobby Petrino officially announced as Missouri State's next head football coach

Sometimes there's a fine line between making a bold move and making a stupid move... this isn't one of those times. I think there is no chance that the Bears don't regret this.

Petrino has had success on the field but he brings a bunch of baggage and his character is certainly suspect. He needed a stepping stone to get back into coaching after being fired at Louisville and MoState needs some success on the field. I see why they are doing this but yep...I think MoState will regret this hire.

Looks like the Petrino resume has two big negatives...

Obviously, the curious incident of the former volleyball player on the motorcycle. Putting her on the payroll was the firing offense. Otherwise, I think most Razorback fans hated to see him go.

Then there is the only coaching performance-related negative. The last year of his second tenure (Louisville hired him back after he left for the Atlanta Falcons six mos after signing a 10 yr extension!) produced a 2-8 record. Mainstream media reports he attacked his team in a personal manner after a close loss to Florida St, thereby losing them, and starting a 7 game losing streak. Louisville was obviously extremely upset with him to buyout $14M of his new contract.

Virginia hit the nail on the head, IMO. MSU needed to make a splashy hire to energize a stagnant program. They've certainly done that. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. The Bears are not exactly locked and loaded for a successful 2020.

I guess the first question will be is whether their recruiting picks up because of him. I think it will. He's obviously there to try and behave and rehabilitate his career. I think it was worth the risk. If he has a couple of good years (and doesn't screw up) then he'll be gone.

Missouri State is about to become the Last Chance U of FCS - look for this to be a transfer station during his entire tenure. He's got great recruiting ties in a lot of places but he's getting to old to huff and puff and compete for scraps on high school level so he'll get 5 studs per year who want to get playing tiime

Good point ... SIU tried that for a while and it failed. But they didn't have Petrino connections ... nor his baggage. I doubt he lasts very long .. unless the plan is to go FBS. I thought Briles was the safer hire from a longevity perspective.

Word of advice. If he offers a ride on his motorcycle, just say "no."

Probably correct from a longevity perspective but from a public relations perspective Petrino is the lesser evil. He had the motorcycle accident with the mistress he put on the payroll at Arkansas and he went off on the players in Louisville and lost the team according to reports. I would submit he is not a guy of great character. Briles, however, was alleged to have essentially turned a blind eye to sexual assaults at Baylor by members of the football team. The story is more complicated that that obviously but that is the essence of the allegations. Both coaches have baggage but I would be surprised if Briles ever coaches college ball again. In this day and age of "me too" it would be a considerable risk to make that hire. I don't think there are many college ADs that would take that risk.

I think Briles won't get a job because he's perceived as too old, now. That's more damaging, apparently, as the cover-up didn't stop the AD from getting the job at Liberty, or the Baylor president getting a book deal. There are enough sleazeballs around to hire these hypocrites.

Would it be fair to say that Petrino's reputation would include the words 'offensive genius'? He was said to have been hired by the Falcons specifically to groom Michael Vick and get their offense rolling. His teams at Louisville (both times), Arkansas, and WKU all scored points. Often gave up a quite a few. The Bears had better have some money for a good DC...

Are you more likely to attend the MSU game this year because of this? I sure as hell am. It's our MVFC finale and given that means November, we could probably use the help putting butts into seats. I'll be particularly interested in how Mr. Offensive Genius fares against what should be a really good Redbird defense.

Oh, and I agree strongly with the remarks about MSU now becoming Last Chance U. SFA (was it Sam Houston St?) used to occasionally strike gold with this approach and I don't recall them having a name brand coach, so maybe it'll work in Springfield.
