Loyola got kicked all over the gym tonight. Not a good time to head up to ChiTown.
No time is a good time for this ISU team to go on the road anywhere.

You like that inbound play where they all ran receiver routes and Hein (the last guy on the floor you want to) caught the ball and had to take the FT’s? Or the constant icing of his own FT shooters at the end of games? Or having Idowu be the inbound guy and almost turn it over? Or having Keyshawn he the guy that is set up for shots when he has clearly been terrible all game?
I have to disagree Rico. We didn’t “set up” Key for those shots. Wasn’t a called play. It just worked out that we moved the ball around and Key was the open man. Hein for all his faults which are many....not my favorite player by a long shot...has been at the FT line before in that situation and made his FTs. Our first option on that OB play was Milik curling back to the inbounds but we didn’t get it to him. I do agree that having Idowu inbound the ball there was strange. IF we had a time-out left I would have had Chastain inbound the ball the last time. I don’t know if we had a time-out left or not.
We did have a TO left because we used it right before Yarb's free throw. I'm surprised we didn't use it on that inbounds play, that said I'm also not sure I want Rey out there trying to catch an inbounds pass in traffic. That said, they were trying to foul Yarbs before the play even started as he came towards Rey, I didn't think there was going to be a way we didn't shoot FTs.

Couple of other thoughts:

--Phil is a beast, and that spin move reverse layup was a thing of beauty. I think we need to run more of the pick and roll with Phil and Yarbs or Phil and Copeland. Really get Phil the ball more.

--Yarbs was fantastic all over the floor today, and I thought had one of the smartest plays all game when he ran down the floor on the fast break and took the charge.

--Chastain can flat out leap. I honestly thing we needs a few more plays to throw him alley oops on the baseline. I also love his shot and that he is getting into rythm. Him adding scoring to his high energy defense and hustle will be huge for us the rest of the year.

--I'm starting to feel bad for Keyshawn. His shot is gone, and I'm starting to wonder if he has the yips. Were I him I would come inside the arc and do what Copeland did to get his confidence back and shoot some closer jumpers and get them to fall.

--Copeland looked fully comfortable today running the point. His shot is getting more and more consistent and I'm starting to care less that he occasion shoots an ill-advised shot.

--Defensively we took a step back until about the last 10 minutes of the game in my opinion. We couldn't keep their guards in check, and we lost way to many guys in rotation and we fouled their guards way too often.

--I've said it before, but we need to throw out any idea of playing the slow down offense, unless the object is to make things much more exciting.

--I hate fouling at the end of the game, way too much could go wrong.

--I was really afraid that last minute heave was going in the way our year has gone.

It is going to get harder and harder to get Phil the ball inside unless someone can step and hit a three. It especially hard when MY and/or Copeland are on the bench.

Matt C made 2 threes today and was more aggresive on iffense which is huge. If you look ay the offensive stats for Phil, MY and MC you would think we won by 25 today. If you look at the offensive stats for the remainder of the team, you would probably guess we loss by 20.
I think our season rests on

1..can we keep up the defensive intensity
2. Can we find a consistent outside threat to keep the lanes open anf opposition honest?

From Muller:

1. The opening play of the game was a designed play.
2. Team D was good for about 10 mins in 2nd half . . . otherwise, not good.
3. On Rey inbounding after the free throw . . . everybody expected the UNI shooter to intentionally miss, Jacobsen told him to miss, and he tried to miss . . . but swished it . . . Rey just reacted.
4. On Key's foul on the 3-pt heave . . . right time, wrong approach . . . Key should've fouled from front, not behind. Muller thought the shot was going to go in.
5. Only made minor adjustments for 2nd half, stressed mostly to do what they were told to do before the game, i.e. pounding it in to Phil and guarding.

My opinions on the game and the Birds:

1. UNI denied the ball to Phil in the 1st half. The Birds made a much more concerted effort to get Phil open in the 2nd half. Phil did a nice job of choosing between attacking and passing out. We just make any shots when he passed out.
2. I was please with our patience on offense. When UNI was denying the ball to Phil, we didn't jack up shots they way we usually do. We had a few bad shots, I didn't groan nearly as many times as I'm accustomed to groaning on our bad shots.
3. MY, Phil, and Chastain combined 22-30 from the field. Rey made his only shot. The rest 5-24, including 3-17 from 3. (Additionally, Chastain made two 3s that didn't count because of turnovers on the Birds.)
4. Chastain is our energy guy right now. It was Jefferson, but since his shot has gone all Keyshawn on him, he's become a problem. He doesn't understand the D.
5. MY has an uncanny ability to make a bad decision at a critical spot in the game. His clear out foul late in the second half killed any momentum we had just built. We had a 7-0 run to build the lead back to 9. Foul on MY, 3 by UNI, steal and 2 by UNI, missed shot by us, board and 2 by UNI. If we score there, we go up 11 and the final score is much different.
6. Right now, if I'm the opponent, I let Key, Josh, and Matt take any 3 they want. I sag so far off they'd think I was guarding someone else. Until they prove they can hit more than one shot in a game I'm not even worrying about them. Otherwise, I just try to frustrate the bejeesus out of Phil and MY.
7. Right now, if I'm the Birds, it's Phil and MY in the paint, Chastain wherever, and pray somebody else will hit some shots.

They’ve got to get better at closing out games but the defensive effort and overall hustle were there and that’s good to see. That spin move by Phil was a thing of beauty.
When you have low expectations for Illinois State University, the history of its leadership looks much more palatable.

It appeared Rey grabbed the ball by instinct. All he had to do was take a step or 2 to his right and Chastain was standing all by himself. Simple inbound and game over.

Sometimes we win despite ourselves. That was one of those endings. Not so much at Valpo.

Nice job getting the W

Happy to see Chastain healthy and contributing. You can see he is gaining confidence. He's a good player.

Best part of this play was after he dunked he immediately ran down the court to play defense.

Was definitely a concern that they came back twice from 10 point deficits in the 2nd half. Credit to them for hitting some big shots, but it we just couldn't quite get the kill shot that we needed like we had vs. UE.

Still, a win is a win.

Chastain & Yarbs were outstanding. D was really good again for the most part. AJ Green is a baller.

If you ever needed an example that MY and PF are the two best players on the team just rewatch tonight’s game. Chastain is turning in to a nice player really like what he’s been doing.

Put those three out there with Copeland to dribble the ball up for the most possible minutes a game.

I would like to see Ike get some of Keyshawn’s minutes next game just to see if there is any spark there bc Evans looks slow on defense and is a liability on offense.

Muller......there are no words. Terrible job of in game coaching.
Actually down the last three minutes only one bad shot even after we slowed it down. Copeland’s forced jumper. You really can’t complain about Key’s three shots. He was squared up and wide wide wide open. The only real fault otherwise was that Fayne or Milik didn’t take those shots. If we are gonna be good Key has to find his stroke.

MY, PF, MC the new big 3??? It sure seemed like it.
Until our guards find their shot again I don't see why we don't run MY and PF pick and rolls and a kick out to MC all game...I know too much to ask..BUT something has got to start being consistent with our offense.

i cant believe defenders are still flying out at Key right now. but use it to your advantage. give a good pump fake, use the dribble to get a 15-18 foot jumper. see a few of those fall and maybe everything clicks.

I agree 100% with this. Start working from outside in. If the 3 isnt falling shoot some 15fters...if he can get those to fall drive to the basket. My guess is he has now taken up residence in his own head and is thinking about every shot he takes. He just needs get anything to fall, so he can start playing the game again rather than thinking about it.

I'm glad people are finally starting to see what Chas brings to the table. Chas was told to be more aggressive because he is one of the best shooters on the team. He takes good shots every time. I would be surprised if he ever finished a game where he takes multiple shots with a FG % under 55. He's currently shooting 56% from the field and 44% from 3. He's just a good, smart, high energy player. He's a guy coaches love to coach.

Not much more can be said about the game that hasn't already been said.

Looking forward to Loyola.... Here's something that may have slipped someone's mind... Matt Chastain was there as a freshmen before a knee injury kept him out and then transferred here. This is the first time Chas will be playing at Loyola without being a member of the Blers. Loyola HC Porter Moser was asked if he was surprised with Chas' play this far. Moser said, "No..... no I'm not," and said nothing else. I know it didn't end bad with them and Moser did ISU a favor by allowing him to transfer in the conference, but I hope Chas wants to put on a show against his old team.
