I'd like for someone in the MVC media to start making calls to the Valley office and get clarification on this.

ESPN+ was announced yesterday by ESPN as a new $4.99/month streaming service and it includes some content being moved from ESPN3 to this new ESPN+.

Hopefully, it is a situation in which if you currently have a cable subscription that includes ESPN/2/U/News/SEC/Longhorn, whatever that you will still be able to access the ESPN3 content. It's kind of a load of crap if not. Why pay for the "basic" ESPN channels just to pay another $5 a month, directly to them?
ESPN+ is also a way to get some extra money out of current subscribers, ones who might already be used to thousands of live sports over streaming. If this new service sounds a lot like ESPN3, the current online home—provided by many ISPs*—for thousands of sports that aren’t televised on ESPN’s TV channels, you’d be right.
If ESPN+ gets me all of the ESPN channels including ESPN 3, I would cancel cable and just pay for that. For all of that $5/month would be a steal.

Reading the article, one of the surprising things is it says ESPN will begin broadcasting some NHL games on this + garbage. I don't remember the last hockey game I watched on ESPN that wasn't college.

I'd probably be with you. I'd seriously consider canceling cable if ESPN is doing a 5$/All access sort of thing. I have a feeling that isn't what this is, but that would be awesome.

If it doesn't I probably won't even bother looking at what it offers until they move all the ISU games onto plus content.

ESPN has to do something - ever since they went political (to the left), the red ink has been flowing and the reason they let a lot of people go.

Way more to the ESPN struggles than politics

Yes, but that was the was the straw that broke the camel's back.

What made ESPN? It was college football and college basketball - then added baseball. When they added useless NBA - slide, then only focusing on the P5 - slide some more, then a lot of bad contracts with on-air personalities - slide more.

You mean like the President having a decades long coke problem? I'm sure he made sound judgement on deals.

According to this article, ESPN+ isn't replacing anything.

Perhaps this will provide a platform to make the occasional game from the local Fox Sports channels available to a wider audience, or at least provide the mechanism for that when "broadcast" rights are renewed.

Yeah that article makes it sound like we would be off ESPN3 (free for a lot of us with an internet subscription) and on this new $4.99/month service.

Facebook live doesn't interface well on my TVs. ESPN3, however, is flawless on my end. Super consistent and reliable. My only gripe is the in-arena audio sounds more like a radio broadcast than a televised basketball game. The same can be said for ESPN3 ISU football games.

But compared to the old days when we had to rely on All-Access, complete with handheld cameras and intermittent audio/video loss, ESPN3 provides so much accessibility for out-of-market fans and recruits. As far as I'm concerned, ISU cannot continue to extend their "fan footprint" without this level of free visibility. Truly a game-changing arrangement IMO.

Find a friend who has traditional cable. Use their login info for access to sports apps. Pay them some stupid low price like $10 a month. Everyone eats something. Everyone pays less.

Wonder what the small print was in the 10yr deal named “The Valley on ESPN3” that was signed in 2015?

Fine print...

"Subject to change without your consent. If an MVC team wins the NCAA National Championship then MVC will be charged $250,000/team to be released from ESPN auspices."

Looks like we get to pay for programming that we used to get with ESPN3 alone. Terrific.

It's still not clear to me. Obviously they are only talking about the rest of this season but some events will still be on ESPN3.
TV Everywhere streaming will continue to provide authenticated access to ESPN’s linear networks and ESPN3 for pay TV subscribers.

ESPN+ will offer fans more sports, more leagues and more games -- as well as original shows, films and an unmatched on-demand sports library.

ESPN+ will not include access to stream ESPN’s existing linear networks and ESPN3.

For the remainder of the Spring 2018 term, other Conference-produced live content will continue to be available on The Valley on ESPN3 -- the league’s co-branded digital network with ESPN.

In addition to the 80 MVC events that will be available on ESPN+, an additional 33 softball and 23 baseball productions will also be shown on ESPN3.
