Turnovers and poor free throw shooting was why it got close at the end. Even though it got close, it never felt like the game was in doubt.

Copeland looked more comfortable which is good. I thought Augustana did a good job of not allowing many open 3s which forced ISU to have to go inside. We shot around 60 percent for the game.

It was an exhibition game, not going to base the whole season on it.

This team will not beat FGCU.
I’m guessing 11-7 in conference and 21 wins overall.
Hilarious.

The team hardly woke up for the early start, had a 17 point lead one point, and some are saying this shows what they will be like during the regular season???
This. We got up big then went into coast mode. Different mindset for these type of games. My only complaint was that in the final 6 minutes or so we had too many quick.possessions. Gotta play score and time. Their coach coached his ass off till the last second. They canned some threes to keep it interesting

I think Augie deserves more credit than they are getting. They shot the ball well and were surprisingly quick.

Augustana had some quick guards that shot the ball decent. They didnt have the inside presence but competed. I thought they were well coached and played hard start to finish.
They faired better against the zone then our man to man. They were up 22 to 16 with 11 something to go in the first half and our man to man stifled them for the rest of the half and the start of the second half. We got up by 17 and the birds put it on coast.

Tuesday will give us a good indication where we stand. I still think team rebounding and turnovers will dictate how far this team goes.

The careless with the ball is a lack of discipline. You do not just turn that on and off. No question about talent on the floor - the biggest problem last year? Turnover and offensive discipline. We win will a lot of games just with our talent - however, it is the games against good teams and close games late in the second that make the difference.

Everyone should realize that they ran a simple offense where they would pick a guy at the top of the circles and then work the ball around looking for an open shot or drive. Mostly the same offense they ran against Lewis with simple picks and drives. There will be more sets and schemes against FGCU.

Honestly, it seemed that AUG players were so slow that it actually helped them in that our players would end up being overly aggressive and would wind up either bumping and fouling them or they would try to adjust which would ultimately leave the AUG player open. AUG passed the ball fairly good considering being a D-III against a better team. Their main guard had a habit of elbowing and pushing off which I heard DM point out to the refs several times. He was so small that he kind of could get by with it. He only got called one time on it by the refs but could have been multiple. A meaningless game -- but the refs were not that good for either team.

The 2 game takeaway is that this team is very deep and skilled. The new players have a lot that they bring to the table especially offensively. I am not sure how deep the rotation will be but they could easily go 8-9 deep and not lose a whole lot if applied the right way. Lots of good shooters this year. Rey's FTs make me nervous though. Fayne seems improved on FTs and that 10-12 footer he has been working on for a couple of years. This team also has shown more of a penchant to drive. If the 3 is not there, they have taken the ball to the hoop which I really like. If they can drive and hit the 3 then that puts them a a winnable position every game.

We can't expect perfection from everyone including MY. They are going to make mistakes. MY actually looked really good -- he made one pass to Fayne where he was in stride right at the basket in traffic for a nice dunk. Not many could have made that pass. He has skills and I look forward to his continuing development. Boogie may be one of the best unsung players on the team -- he can do it all: D, pass, shoot.

It is the defense that takes time to gel as a team especially not having much game experience to work things out. A lot of missed D assignments. AUG was clever on their picks and moved the ball around well. And, yes, they did have quite a few 3's that went in with a hand in their face so it was one of those games where some of their last second bail out shots went in.

It may take through December for this team to get that staunch D to work as a team but they should be able to score decently every game.

I hope they come out of the gate quickly against FGCU. A tough non-con schedule awaits them.

:text-+1: same thoughts. If you read this thread and the article you come away with:
1. ISU was not ready
2. ISU did not try or did not have to try
3. Other team very quick which created problems
4. Other team too slow which created problems (never heard this excuse before )
.....etc
Throw in poor free throw shooting and Milik admittedly not feeling comfortable and Tuesday night is not much time to make and practice adjustments.

I think every one has to get used to the fact that MY is going to turn it over. He's going to have the ball the most and he's going to turn it over and a very high rate. HCDM obviously is willing to live with it so we might as well get used to it.

A couple of his turnovers were hot passes to newcomers in transition near the basket

I'm just saying, he had 126 turnovers last season. He's going to have probably more this year. Better get used to it.

I think it's a poor way to look at things. If he refuses to put in the work to stop turning over the ball then force him to by punishing him in some way. make him run stairs every damn practice from beginning to end until he starts to learn. guarantee he will learn.

Agreed. Just pointing out that some will be bumble headed, some will be from aggression in feeding teammates. He's going to have 5-7 TO games and 1-3 games. I'm OK with the aggressive ones, need to dial in the goofy ones like spin moves between defenders and tripping over your own feet.

He's a 5th yr senior. You really think he's going to change? Dan obviously has weighed the pros and cons. He's our best player, best scorer and best way to win, even with the turnovers. It's not changing now.

I think he will change if the alternative is to be dead tired with jelly legs everyday from here on out. stop being easy on this kid.

I was thinking taking care of the ball would be an area of focus this year in order to improve his draft chances. Are we saying one of his weaknesses from last year is going to get worse?
