Re: Zenger out at Kansas

Porter Moser is having a GREAT year True and if he had been great here he wouldn't have been fired. I take it your point is that a good leader should be able to look at more than just past and current results and be able to judge coaching qualities that project well for the future. If that's how th...

Re: Zenger out at Kansas

It was really just a matter of time. He's a nice guy, but he spent a lot more time talking about what he was going to accomplish, than accomplishing it. As usual you are leaving out an important component. Yes Sheahon Zenger talked about the potential here at Illinois State being similar to Kansas ...

Re: Game Times Announced

I'm liking the schedule. I think we have to give credit where due. All the other state FCS programs only have 5 home dates - we have 6. In addition to season tickets I've been trying to do one road trip every year. This year I'm thinking Fargo/NDSU. I've never been there and I'm not getting any youn...

Re: Coverage Strategy - Man, Ball, or Both

I'm guessing that our coverage strategy will not change. Brock Spack remains the HC and Cody Deti is still the D-secondary coach. Only the D-Coord, the middleman, has changed. You can make a strong argument for turning and looking for the ball because it's so easy from up in the stands. We can see w...

Re: Spring game on Saturday....what will you be looking for the most?

So, at LB, nice to have size and numbers for a change. If we go with a 3-4 D, we have Kelly-Martin, Deforest, Vandenburg, and Clark? Who'm I missing? I don't think there's any reason to get too worked up about this 3-4D talk. By position we have Tyree Horton as our conference defensive POY candidat...

Re: Spring game on Saturday....what will you be looking for the most?

I would not be surprised if they try lining up one of the RBs at receiver on some plays. Maybe Birch becomes a big, strong receiver for us. Hmmm you might be on to something. I just noticed that Hendershot has wandered off the roster. It could be just an omission. That's been know to happen. If he ...

Re: Spring game on Saturday....what will you be looking for the most?

While I am no football expert - a QB that panics, throwing up a pass off of his back foot for an interception on his own part of the field is not good. With 6 seconds before halftime, ball on the plus 25 yd line - and you take a sack. That certainly wasn't his best play but I like our senior QB a l...

Going to need big years from our DEs Harris and Swaine
and Tuvone Clark. He can go as a DE or LB'er based on formation.

Re: Offseason Wish List

Then after handing off the #25 at 215 lbs several times, bring in #21 at 225 lbs (Smith) for a few punishing runs. And just for fun, let's finish with couple handoffs to #8 at 235 lbs (Birch) .. our high hurdler. The fact that we will have these 3 guys behind a much more veteran OL this season .. a...

Re: Offseason Wish List

We may take people by surprise this year. I agree with this and your earlier point that what we know about Beathard is that he's a very good OC when he has talent. He'll have tools to work this season and he doesn't have to overthink things. Handing the ball off to #25 will be a good place to start...

Re: Offseason Wish List

I’m happy Beathard is back, but all we really know is that he can coach a helluva read offense if he has the right personnel. I’m hopeful We know Beathard as a read option OC but before he came here he had an extensive coaching history with mostly drop back passing QB's. Beathard made a swift adjus...

Re: Offseason Wish List

I expect Kolbe to win the job again. But I also think his performance has to improve or someone else will come into the game. I totally agree and I think we should set the bar high when it comes our expectations for the QB position. Our starting QB should complete over 60% of his passes and he shou...

Re: Davontae Harris

Davontae clearly has some abilities not usually found among Valley DB's. He had interest from some major programs in HS but that fell off when he suffered a serious injury his senior year. Mike Gardner our incoming DB from Texas experienced the same thing. Hopefully lightening will strike twice and ...

Re: National Signing Day 2018

I think he was really touting the Bussone kid from Normal as a potential impact this fall - he's talking about someone 6'2 300 lbs. who "explodes" and is his (Spack's) kind of nose tackle. I see on John Ridgeway's twitter acct where he now describes himself as a D-Lineman "IL state football player ...

Re: Elijah Smoot committed....

You know I've heard StL Cardinal announcer Mike Shannon refer to the Cardinals as the Redbirds many times (he's not alone) and no one questions that. If A-Cardinals equals B-Redbirds then doesn't B equal A?
